Contudo, estudos científicos mostraram que a diminuição dos stocks se deve, na verdade, à pesca excessiva da mesma indústria que se queixa da sua falta. O massacre das focas bebés não só é cruel e chocante mas também ecologicamente perigoso, uma vez que o aquecimento global e as alterações climáticas estão a afectar drasticamente o habitat destes animais, o que pode, em conjunto com a morte de um milhão de animais em apenas três anos, levar à sua extinção.
